Week of the Young Child

Sophia's school participates in the National Celebration of the "Week of the Young Child". I had never heard of it prior to this year and initially had a negative reaction that it was just one more "National something to celebrate day". However as I learned more about the intent behind it and have been increasingly aware of Sophia's tendency to 'grow while I'm not looking'; I have been grateful for this week.

Through this initiative opportunities are created to spend intentional and specific time with your child. "No TV" vouchers are handed out with the encouragement to play a game as a family instead. Not officially sponsored by "Week of the Young Child" was a kitchen dance party featuring the hits of Harry Belafonte.

The formal events were Monday Muffins with Mom (as requested her beverage was 3 parts cream to one part coffee, mine was 3 parts coffee to one part cream):

Donuts with Dad on Tuesday:

And an opportunity for Sophia to showcase her artwork beside her classmates, complete with classical music and serving trays of cheese, crackers and grape juice to round out the week:

Each piece was being sold for $1 as a fundraiser for the school.

Sophia's Godfather Glen surprised her at the show. She observed, "there were lots of grandparents here tonight but I was the only one with a Glennie!"
