First Easter: Part II

Watching my daughter attempt to consume a plastic egg, I realized there was no way to adequately explain that this wasn't food. In a similar sense I was unable to express to her why this day is so important.

In the coming years I will talk to her about how sitting on a giant bunny's lap, or dying an egg and then hiding it, or even eating chocolate is not actually what Easter is about.

Easter celebrates an act of forgiveness that rather than accepting an apology was the acceptance of another's punishment.

An act of love that is not based on sharing common interests or biological relations but on the ultimate self sacrifice.

The acknowledgement that no human is capable of perfection, but that all are extended grace.

The recognition that our individual worth is not based upon what we produce, but by whom we were created.

I look forward to when Sophia can begin to comprehend such a miracle, one which will require her to maintain some of her childlike faith in order to believe that such great hope is possible in a world that can often be quite dark.
